Limits like fears are often just an illusion

I’m a little late posting this but I’d be remiss not to pay my own little tribute and the man’s words speak for themselves.  To be honest I have never quite recovered from Michael Jordan’s retirement. I hope we do see him on the court at 50.

Hold serve, hold, hold. Move up. Attack. Kill. Smile

Quite enough to get anyone’s attention. This is part of one of Serena Williams’ mantras. Now you have an idea what she’s thinking when she’s standing in center court in those Wimbeldon whites.

Tim Adams of The Guardian has a very complimentary review of Serena’s book “Queen of the Court: An Autobiography” here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2009/sep/13/queen-of-the-court

He concludes:

You don’t learn how to hit a topspin backhand by reading this book, sadly, but you do discover Serena’s Post-it mantra for success: “Hold serve, hold serve, hold serve. Focus, focus, focus. Be confident, be confident, be confident. Hold serve, hold, hold. Move up. Attack. Kill. Smile.”

Nobody has ever done it better.

If you were neither here nor there about reading this book before this review, you’ll want to it by the time you’re done.

Caster glams up

So here’s South African running prodigy Caster Semanya as cover girl on You magazine. I like the makeup and the accessories (especially the bangles), but the dress is a bit old for an 18 year old – and looks like she borrowed it from her mama or an aunt. But hey I sometimes had to borrow from my mama’s closet when I was 18 so that’s okay. Overall nice pic. The yahoo story calls her “embattled”. What is she battling? Other than her own human instinct which probably tends to make her sometimes not feel like getting up at 4ish in the a.m. and spending all day in the rigorous physical training required to be a world class athlete. Why won’t some members of the media get that it’s not all about them? It’s Africa – not all the women have to look like Barbie just to please the sensibilities of people they don’t know exist. Caster is a hero to young people in Africa and the pride of the elders. That’s what counts.
